<p>The wing was formed in October 1992 as the primary flying component of the Air Force Flight Test Center (AFFTC), which was organized in June 1951. The 412th TW replaced the 6510th Test Wing that had been the main flying unit at Edwards AFB since March 1978. Virtually every operational aircraft type and numerous proof-of-concept prototypes have been assigned to the AFFTC. As the title suggests, the Center performs flight evaluation and development of manned aircraft prior to the operational testing and service phase of a type's career. The Center also operates the Test Pilots' School, where experienced pilots and engineers are trained for flight test and aerospace research work. The giant Utah Test and Training Range is administered by the AFFTC to evaluate and develop remotely-piloted vehicles and cruise missiles. The 412th TW assumed control of the transport types which were stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB under the 4950th TW.
